Aerial apparatus represents a large investment and yet over 90% of the departments that have aerial apparatus under utilize them and many of these departments don't understand their proper use at all. The Aerial Apparatus Operations class will cover light, medium and heavy duty aerial ladders; history of aerial devices; ladder failures; annual testing to prevent ladder failures; and the proper placement and operation of aerial ladders and tower ladders. This presentation is intended for firefighters, apparatus operators, training officers, line officers, maintenance personnel and chief officers.

1:00 PM Photo PRE4: Store (Taxpayer & Strip Mall) Fires
John W. Norman III, Deputy Assistant Chief (ret.), Rescue Operations, FDNY

Category: Strategy & Tactics
Fires in stores and other commercial occupancies are severe threats to our firefighters. More firefighters are killed per alarm in commercial fires than in any other commonly encountered blaze. The toll on a community is often staggering when a block of Main St. is gutted by fire or a major local employer is burnt out. The reason many of the blazes end up so destructive is often traceable to the fire department's lack of preparedness. Fortunately major store fires are not "every day" occurrences, but as a consequence, many departments try to apply "house fire tactics" to commercial fires. This class is designed to highlight the differences between residential and commercial fires, and provide instruction in tactics which have proven effective in dealing with them.

1:00 PM Photo PRE5: Leading as a Fire Officer…Your Fire Department Needs You
Dennis Compton, Chief (ret.), Mesa, AZ, FD, and International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA)

Effective fire officer leadership helps set the stage for the success of fire departments, as well as other fire service organizations. This session will help those who achieve formal positions of rank in an organization provide effective leadership at the fire station, in the battalion, on the shift, in an office, and at the scenes of emergency incidents. Your fire department needs leaders who are performing at their best, and this session will help attendees achieve that for their organizations.
